Shanghai Fish Blooms with Plum Fragrance despite Lingering Spring Chill Time:2026-02-04
In the cool bite of the early spring, the first distinct token of spring often comes from the delicate plum blossoms that brave the cold on the branches. At Fengxian's Shanghai Fish park cluster, this subtle spring signal is already apparent. Along the Jinhai Lake, some 20 plum varieties are quietly holding a "blooming relay" in their respective seasons, gracing the city with its earliest fragrance and touches of color.
Entering the park, a faint, crisp sweetness hangs in the air. On closer look, early bloomers like Pink Zhusha are in full bloom at Pao Pao Park—tender pink blossoms pile up on brown branches, bright and enchanting. Senior Engineer Zhang Yongping at Nine Trees Park Management Co., Ltd. observed that blossoms are a little earlier this year, with 30 to 40 percent of early varieties in bloom; "In another week, the trees will undoubtedly be blanketed in a sea of flowers."
Early plum blossoms shine bright, while countless buds hold quiet promise. On Huxin Island, mid-season varieties like Gangmae and Green-calyx bear round buds like pearls, glowing in the sun against the gentle waves of the Jinhai Lake—calm, yet full of hope. This splendor comes from careful care. Engineer Zhang Yongping noted that proper pruning and fertilizing last winter have led to a richer bloom this year.
This plum feast has just started. As Zhang noted, early varieties are in their prime, mid-season ones have just opened, and late ones are still budding. By around February 10, all will reach full bloom for the best viewing. Meticulously planned, the Shanghai Fish park cluster gathers diverse plum strains like Gangmae, Zhusha, Green-calyx and Gongfen to extend the viewing season, letting visitors savor the elegant spring longer.
From a single bloom to a lakeside of flowers and finally a rosy expanse, Shanghai Fish's plum blossoms are more than a natural scene—they are a gentle but powerful spring invitation. They remind us the cold will fade, vitality flows in every branch, waiting for the highly anticipated magnificent bloom.
