Nine Trees Makes Fifth Appearance at "Shanghai Spring"; Brazilian Pianist's Debut Ushers in New Chapter of Sino-Brazilian Cultural Exchange Time:2026-03-31
On March 28, the series of performances for the 41st Shanghai Spring International Music Festival reached a highlight at the Nine Trees (Shanghai) Future Art Center. On the same day, renowned Brazilian pianist Christian Budu made his China debut, alternating with director Yang Liping's large-scale dance drama,Pingtan Impression. This unique lineup offered Shanghai audiences a cultural experience spanning hemispheres within a single day.
That afternoon, Christian Budu kicked off the event with a masterclass in the studio theater, followed by his official piano recital in the evening. As one of Brazil's most distinguished pianists, Budu won First Prize at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland, and his Chopin recordings have been hailed as among the "best of all time" by France's Diapason magazine. Notably, this performance was not only a featured program of this year's "Shanghai Spring" but also the opening event for the "2026 China-Brazil Year of Culture." Lucas Oliveira Barbosa Lima, Cultural Consul at the Consulate General of the Federative Republic of Brazil in Shanghai, remarked that this marks the first participation of a Brazilian artist in "Shanghai Spring." He added that opening the Cultural Year with Budu's performance holds extraordinary significance.
Beyond introducing top-tier international artistic resources, the theater is deeply committed to rooting high art within the city. Chen Xijia, General Manager of the Nine Trees Future Art Center, noted that subsidized tickets priced at just 80 yuan were made available for Budu's recital, and all ticket holders were invited to attend the afternoon masterclass free of charge. By lowering price barriers and fostering opportunities for direct interaction, the theater aims to transform world-class performances into an accessible part of the public's daily cultural life.
